Some time ago I met an individual I have been helping by providing them with some financial support. When I got a closer look at them I realized they were bigger than the help I was offering them. They deserved better, and I wasn’t the one to give them the greener pastures they deserved. They were supposed to go get it.
As I was meditating on these things the following words came to my mind, “you are where you are because I have been giving you a palliative. Henceforth I will no longer give that to you and you will be able to go for the real thing.” This is how I got the inspiration for this post.
Some people are where they are today because they settled for a palliative and forgot the real thing. A palliative is anything that stops you from going for the original or permanent solution. Sometimes we quickly settle for things that make us feel good for a time or season only to realize later that we are missing out on a lot of things.
Why do people accept palliatives?
When we do not have the mind-set of an achiever or world-changer. When we easily get satisfied with mediocre results.
The price to pay for a permanent solution may seem too high and unreachable.
When we are in a hurry to satisfy our desires and are not ready to be patient and get the real deal.
Ignorance about what is ours and the right we have to take possession of it. Did God not say it is ignorance that makes us perish (Hosea 4:6)?
When the palliative offers temporary satisfaction that is very similar to what we originally dreamed of.
Don’t make of that place, situation, job or position your permanent habitation if God has promised you more. I refuse to go back to Egypt but I equally will not settle in the wilderness. I will enter Canaan no matter how many giants are there. I refuse to be satisfied with less than what God has promised.
Many people never achieve their goals in life because they have consciously or unconsciously chosen to be mediocre. They wonder why they never seem to excel like X or Y. They have not realized that the set of values by which they live is a set up for mediocrity and consequently a sub-standard life.
HOW DOES MEDIOCRITY MANIFEST?
- When you lack the desire and determination to pursue excellence and the higher things in life.
- When you get satisfaction from a sub-standard quality of life.
- When you are unwilling to pay the price and go for a better alternative even when it is possible to do so.
- When you are stuck in the rut of your weaknesses and will not challenge limitations and obstacles on your way.
When you do not believe that God is whom He says He is, that He can do what He says He can do, when you do not believe in yourself as a well of potential created by God you will live a life that is below expectations. Low self-esteem is usually a result of ignorance about who you are and what you have in Christ. When Jesus came on the scene, He knew exactly who He was so no amount of negative appellations and criticism could put Him down.
When you look at creation you will see a Creator who loves quality. You are created in His image, so that quality is innate in you.
- Get to know the Word of God and what He says about you. You are fearfully and wonderfully created (Psalms 139:14). You are a chosen generation (I Peter 2:9).
- You deserve the best things in life. You are blessed because you are of the household of faith. (Galatians 3:7-9).
- Make up your mind to be the best, to go for excellence in everything you do. You can do it (Philippians 4:13).
Isaiah 53:4-5 is one of the most famous in the Old Testament because it is a prophecy about what we, under the new covenant are enjoying today. It is a graphical presentation of the finished work of Christ on the cross of Calvary that purchased our salvation and any other blessing we will ever need in the God. Today, it is very easy to ask God for a car, a house, healing, deliverance and all kinds blessing. Someone even told you salvation is free. Yes indeed! It is free and so because someone paid a bitter price for it to be free. Salvation was not easy when My Jesus was slapped, beaten, spat at and flagellated. It wasn’t free when He carried that cross like a criminal, falling and getting up, mocked and humiliated by those for whom He was carrying that cross. He was considered stricken by God, smitten by him and afflicted. Many concluded that His God has forsaken Him. But all this while, He was bruised for your iniquity, crushed for your transgression. He was chastised for your peace and with His stripes you can claim your healing today. Had you been there at the time, would you have treated Jesus differently? Would you have joined the chorus to mock, jeer and spit? I cannot guarantee you that I would have been different had I been there. I cry when I think of it all. I consider myself one of those mockers who are now benefiting from the results of the action I so much mocked. I can now come into God’s presence with numerous petitions because someone accepted to carry His cross.
Lord Jesus, forgive me for nailing you to the cross and coming back later to eat the fruits thereof. You gave me a chance to live again; I consecrate this life to you. I offer myself to you as a living sacrifice, a sweet smelling aroma pleasing and precious in your sight. Take me and use me as you will. Amen.
